990 billion cigarettes sold globally last year by the Philip Morris divisions of Altria (No. 20), making it the secon-largest cigarette manufacturer worldwide, after China National Tobacco, which most recently reported 2004 sales of 1.9 trillion cigarettes. (SOURCE: Fortune Magazine)

Powerful Women

10 female CEOs in the FORTUNE 500 – a small number, but up from just one a decade ago. Together  these women oversee $101 billion, or 1% of FORTUNE 500 sales. The woman in command of the biggest company this year is CEO Brenda Barnes of Sara Lee (No. 111), which has $19.7 billion in sales. (SOURCE: Fortune Magazine)

Giants of the law

170% growth in the number of attorneys at the 100 top-grossing U.S. law firms over the past 19 years. The average headcount at these firms jumped from 260 in 1986 to 702 in 2005, and their share of all working lawyers nearly doubled, to 6.4%. 1,400,000 is the size in square feet of data senters Microsoft is building on farmland near Quincy, Wash. Equivalent to ten Costcos, the "server farms" are a part of Microsoft's strategy to exploit the booming market of web-based software and services – but the heavy spending has spooked investors and sent Microsoft shares tumbling.
